The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
