The Journey of a Movement is often characterized by clear stages.

1. The Core Concept

A charismatic leader or coaches present a new and transcendent idea that promises a solution for disconnected individuals.

So here we are. Plans are in motion to challenge the establishment overseas. Tensions are rising. Smoke is rising from within. A lone figure, vulnerable, shivering, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT smeared across his chest in chicken blood, has stumbled from the field and is removed in secrecy to a different team in county cricket.

Do you recall the beginning, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of Bazball without brains.

2. Love-Bombing

Cult leaders offer a new start, a brighter tomorrow, support, redemption among a group united in belief in the philosophy.

How did it feel back then? Just men on a balcony feeling good. Ink. Strength. Determination. Confident masculinity. Oh sure, England’s players often say it’s not a real term, which is funny since it’s not recognized, what exactly did I just watch?

But we know what it is. It’s the player playing a shot so outrageous it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of the leader at his peak, an expression conveying: pensive Nordic god, strong features, untamed style, genuinely raw you half-expect to glance over and see him playing in the field bare-chested and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the batsman still being allowed to talk in press conferences, appearing as a cheerful animal formally attired, uttering phrases such as we’re challenging norms. Indeed, the vibe, for quite a long time, was entirely positive.

3. The Growth Phase

Development stage. Togetherness strengthened through repetition of mantras. These ideas may seem irrational as a test of “true belief”.

Does anyone else feel? The backlash, the fury, the feeling of letdown following the initial loss feels overblown, overdone. The batting collapsed on the field, as history shows. They were dominated in the field in a short span as plans unraveled, carved around by the batsman imitating their style effectively, adaptive to conditions, a man playing with aura.

Now there is the pile-on, the rage, the perception of the team as a kind of abomination. 4. The Backlash Phase

Issues emerge because of mistakes. Yet, mistakes are denied. It starts to feed on anger towards critics.

It’s the imperial sport of the British, the pioneering brand. And notably, the nation has its own culture, a structure of hidden ranks, a royal family remains.

The players have been enclosed in this system for years. In trying to escape from it, to build a better atmosphere, they are just repeating their upbringing, building another enclosure, a limited community, but now with a modern squad and a leader promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.

Live where your feet are. Run towards the danger. But no matter how fast and far you run, you’re always basically in the same place.
