Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

What next for these two sides?

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
